In the process of learning about what God put me here for in this life, I began to realize something about why so many people never do anything near what they were created for. Think about it, if anything I’ve said so far has registered with you so far in this series, it should be that there are many things we go through life knowing nothing about. But I want to focus today on the reason why that happens. Why the vast majority of people never find that hidden treasure that God built into them. If you’ve ever wondered about that, we are going to get the answer today – and more importantly, the solution so that you do not end up like so many others!
Hidden & Concealed By Design
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Luke 11:9 (KJV)
A year before writing this episode, I had a very surprising dream about a personality characteristic God highlighted. The dream showed that I received a box in the mail with several things in it. At the bottom of the box were two ornaments for decorating a house. When I woke up from the dream, I wrote it down as usual and started thinking about where to begin interpreting it. More than all other symbols in that dream, one thing stood out to me – the fact that the ornaments were hidden beneath other items in the box. And that is where I began looking in the Bible for the interpretation of what God was trying to tell me.
Without too much searching, I landed on the verse 1 Peter 3:4 which spoke about the “hidden man of the heart” and the “the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit”. As soon as I found that verse, I knew that was exactly what the dream was about! What shocked me was that God was telling me He had given me that heart of meekness which is said to be highly valued by God as a “great price”. But, let’s stop and ask a question here. What exactly is a “meek heart” and why should we care about it?
Meekness is defined in Strong’s Concordance as “mildness of disposition, gentleness of spirit”. In real life application, meekness is a character trait where a person is quiet and does not appear to have much to say. They keep much to themselves unless they are asked, and when they answer, they only say as much as necessary. In other words, they are like a stealth person who might actually be the smartest person in the room, except that few will discover that.
Here’s why this is important and how it relates to our topic today. In the Bible, Jesus tells us to study His heart and says in Matthew 11:29 that He has a meek and lowly (humble) heart. That means that one of the most important personality traits of Jesus is that He is a person who does not say much to us unless we ask. Are you starting to see where this is going now?
Diligent Searching Required
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
Proverbs 25:2 (KJV)
In the process of trying to figure out what we should do with our lives, the first thing we must do is start by asking God what He made us for. If we do not do that, there is no guarantee we will ever get the answer. In order for us to come to God (the Father), we must start with Jesus. Since Jesus is our starting point for salvation and all other things we need, we must recognize what kind of person we are dealing with. Now that we already know He is a reserved and quiet person who will not volunteer information without being asked, it should start to make us afraid of what we have falsely assumed about our lives that we never bothered to ask Him about!
But these passages I referred to above are not the only places where we find out about the character of Jesus and God. If you start doing a search right now, you will find out that in many places, we are instructed (even commanded) to do a diligent search for all of the most important elements of our lives – including that we first establish a solid two-way contact with the God who made everything!
In a book that I strongly recommend reading, “Face to Face Appearance from Jesus: The Ultimate Intimacy“, by David E. Taylor, there is a whole section on this meek personality of Jesus and why it is so critical to fulfilling your destiny. When you read that book you will find out the account of an American preacher who spent 20 years of his life being a pastor OUTSIDE of God’s will! When he began praying and seeking God for answers about his real purpose, Jesus appeared to him and told him about his error. When that man questioned Jesus about why he was allowed to spend that many years of his life doing all the wrong things, Jesus told him simply because “he never asked”.
I’m paraphrasing a bit here so I recommend you get the book yourself along with another one where that pastor’s account came from – “Plans, Purposes, and Pursuits” by Kenneth E. Hagin. I was recommended to read that book in the beginning of my own search for my purpose and I read it more than once. If you take my advice, you will see how critical it is that you do NOT make false assumptions about your life and waste the gift God gave you (only one lifetime) by doing everything but what you were created to do!
No Scary Assumptions!
One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
Psalms 27:4 (KJV)
So now I hope I am starting to make the point of why most people go through their lives without getting one single thing God would have given them. Why so many fall very far short of what they could have accomplished – to the benefit of millions of people! These are what I call “scary false assumptions” that will have a lasting effect on all of eternity – and not just for you!
God made us to be kings in His kingdom. We are required to search for the things that are most valuable regarding our destiny. Just as precious metals are not found laying around in the dirt, we must make a diligent effort to find what was hidden for us. That search begins with the correct understanding of the personality of Jesus, whom we must pray to in order to find out why we are here!
When we see that Jesus spoke in parables and then He said they would only be understood by those who really cared enough to find their meaning, now we must understand that our search cannot be casual. We need to know what kind of Person we are dealing with when it comes to the most important and eternal matters about our lives. ASK and keep asking until you get these answers. That is what I did and you see what kind of astonishing results I got!
- What answers are you lacking in your life?
- What pieces of your destiny do you know nothing about?
- What questions have you not asked?
- Have you not asked these critical questions due to a lack of faith?
Stop now and make it the top priority of your life to do as King David did – to inquire of the Lord about all things!
