Here’s a part of my story that is definitely outside of the expected scope of this series but, it is very much a significant and relevant piece. It’s about how I slowly adjusted to the reality that healing miracles do happen today and that there is a very well known set of “principles” that we must practice in order to see them happen. This is like everything else I write about here in that my learning curve and adjustment process was very steep and difficult. In this episode, I’ll tell you a little more about how I became much more comfortable with this realm and that I’ve even seen some results when I stepped out and took a big risk (leap of faith) not knowing what would happen.
A Simple Testimony From South America
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Mark 16:17-18 (KJV)
Well, where to start! This is such a huge subject and I once did a live audio talk where I told part of my story about how I learned that healing miracles are still real today and some of the ones I’ve seen happen with my own eyes. Maybe I should start in the beginning how I was raised in a church that claimed to believe in miracles, but yet you hardly ever saw them happen. I then moved on to a different kind of church when I became an adult and none of those churches believed in miracles and in fact, they actively rejected them. At some point later on, I met other Christians from different churches who said they believed in miracles but again, you never saw them happen.
One day, I met a girl from South America through some website, and we started chatting about matters of faith. It was obvious to me from the beginning that she had a kind of faith I had never seen before. She came from a family that didn’t have very much in material terms, and I knew there was something very pure about what she was telling me. I recognized very quickly that I had lived my whole life without what she was talking about. Miracles were normal for her, and it was obvious she was much more of a Christian than any of those I had met in my country. She wasn’t bogged down by such western intellectualized, dead religious doctrines that left you thinking you were right but believing in nothing.
One day, she told me a very simple story that stopped me and caused an abrupt shift in my beliefs that I never turned back from. This is a girl who grew up according to what many of us would think of as 1800’s standards. I don’t say that in a negative way at all but rather, to make the distinction between the western dead religion versus a real Biblical faith that she had. She told me how one day, she was with her family in a very rural part of a South American country and someone stepped on a small young chicken and injured it. She felt very sad about what had happened and she prayed that it would be healed. At some point later that day, she noticed that the chicken was healed and everything was fine with it.
When I heard her tell me that, I couldn’t speak. I had never, in 40 years of American church religion, heard anything like that before. I started crying and could not say another word. I knew what she told me was true and the simple purity of her faith was at that time, something I had never seen in any church I had ever been to. My life had just been permanently changed and I was never going back to what I had been led to “believe” in my American churches.
My Early Learning & Practice Experience
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
James 5:15 (KJV)
A couple years later, I started watching Sid Roth shows, and in one of them, he had a lady from England, who went through a 12 year process of praying for miracles before she saw one happen. The story of this woman, Aliss Creswell, was similar to the girl from South America in that she also had a very simple and pure faith. As I listen to her story and read one of her books, it grabbed me in the same way, and further reinforced, the proof that God did expect us to believe in (and see) healing miracles in our time now.
Those two testimonies started me on a journey of learning about the supernatural realm of healing miracles, and what it takes to see them happen in real life. one of many things that stood out to me was the verse I posted above, Mark 16:17-18, where it clearly says that we must take action on what we believe in order for anything to happen. I began to understand that healing miracles do not just fall out of the sky simply because you believe in them. NO!
Jesus plainly demonstrated (and commanded) what we must do for these to happen now. All those passages are not historical monuments to the past that we can excuse away thinking there is some expiration date on them. I realized myself when I discovered that verse one day, that no one had ever taught in any of those 40 years of churches, that we are expected to do exactly as it says, and we are expected to see results!
Jumping ahead a little here, I started diving in to the subject because I wanted to learn what it takes for me to be used for healing miracles. I started reading books and I even went to a conference in Virginia where top Christian leaders like Bill Johnson and Randy Clark came to teach us how this works. In that conference, people were actually healed! When that conference finished, I immediately wanted to put all that I had learned into practice and it wasn’t long before I got my first opportunity.
One day, I met with a friend from work who had just been injured in a basketball or volleyball game. Her thumb got jammed and it swelled up and wouldn’t bend. As we walked around the historic area in Williamsburg for a couple hours, I told her what I had just learned (with a high degree of insecurity). I grabbed her thumb and said “in Jesus name, be healed”. I then told her to check it out and when she did, she exclaimed something like “what the heck?!” Her thumb could now move and for the next couple hours, she kept looking at it in amazement. Believe me, I was just as amazed myself by what had happened!
Skipping ahead again, a few years later, I felt the urge to become an Uber driver and I knew God wanted me to use it as a prophetic outreach opportunity. I was equally as insecure about that as I was with my friend above but, I did push myself several times to pray for healings with some of my many passengers. Yes, I missed a few opportunities but I was able to practice what I had been learning.
A Long Adjustment Period
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
James 2:19-20 (KJV)
If I were to tell my full story here, it would easily be a few hours long. Let’s come back to that at a later time and for now, I want to skip ahead and tell a few things I’ve learned in my process of adjusting to this realm of being used by God in healing miracles. I’ll have to keep this part shorter so I won’t give full explanations for each item.
For some reason, I came into this with a very rigid and black and white mindset which greatly hindered me. I had no idea how to approach people in public who needed a healing and I missed several opportunities. What I learned about words of knowledge from the Virginia conference was extremely hard to practice because of my inability to approach people for things like this.
I later realized that’s one of the reasons God wanted me to be an Uber driver because it forced me to learn how to just make simple small talk with people. As I became more comfortable with that, that helped pave the way for me to go the next step and take a leap of faith in praying for them. That was a very good start, and yet, it still took time for my mind to adjust to all this and part of it was correcting my very rigid mindset.
In the beginning stages of all this, I did have several dreams showing that I could walk up to people and I would see healing miracles happen. It took a few years before I learned that when God shows you something in a dream, that does not necessarily mean you are going to see it manifest in real life right away. There is a process of time required where you must step out in faith and practice the thing before you see it happen consistently. That was something I did not know in the beginning and that also hindered me.
Being successful in this area really does require us to get outside of ourselves and learn how to be friendly and approachable with people out in the world. Conversational skills really are helpful and yet, trying to bring up supernatural topics with western minded people in my country can still be very challenging, although not impossible.
There is also the matter of a gift of healing versus the anointing we receive in the kingdom of God, which allows us to go beyond the limited extent of our gift. That is a very long discussion for a later time but, for now you need to start by reading everything I’ve already written about the principles of the Kingdom of God. When you do, you need to pay attention to what I’ve said there (which most do not).
On top of that, there is a distinction between a healing and a miracle. A healing requires a process of time, while a miracle happens instantly. I have seen both but in more serious cases, healings appear to be more typical. For example, I have observed people with cancer being miraculously healed (tumors falling off) and those in wheelchairs have needed to get up, walk around and exercise their muscles for their legs to be fully restored.
Lastly, although healing miracles are not a central part of my purpose, it is still something that I have a strong conviction about and I still put what I’ve learned into action whenever I have the opportunity. Not to mention, I’ve learned a lot by physically going to the yearly miracle crusades at my global parent ministry (JMMI), where many hundreds and thousands of people have been healed.
My Testimony On Live Audio
This is the very short version of my testimony of learning about healing miracles and there’s still much more to tell. If you would like to hear my original discussion on a live audio app from 2022, check out my video that I recently reposted on my YouTube channel…
