This is really going to sound bad but, if I were to say there were never any times when I wanted to quit God’s process and do something else, I’d be lying. Actually, there have been a few times in the last 10 years when I was more than ready to get off this wagon trip through the howling desert. If God had not made it really hard for me to quit and do something else, I would have lined up with the long list of those who rationalized not doing what God put them here for. Just last week, something exactly like what I’m describing came up in a conversation at an airshow I volunteered at and I had 2 dreams showing where my mindset was taking me. Let’s talk a little about what happened…

This is the part where we recall an earlier episode where I talked about being a former flight instructor and wishing I could be flying for the last several years. I think that’s the one where I also told about the miracle it took to get me back up to speed again as a commercial licensed pilot. In real life, all that took place a few months ago and since then, I’ve only had one chance to fly and a bunch of simulator flights, which were very helpful. Unfortunately, despite that miraculous progress, nothing else as a pilot has turned up.

Then came the conversation with a 20 something year-old girl who is a new instructor at the flight school I’m part of and she just got hired to fly one of the aircraft my company is planning to buy. All that sounded great, except for the fact that she only had about 1/3 as many hours as I have and she had only been an instructor for the last 4 months. Yep… if you’re catching where this is going, I really started thinking hard that I could have been doing that also and how much I would have loved that.

And right here is where I need to tell two dreams that tied directly into the situation. One of those dreams was about 5 months earlier and it hit the nail on the head showing exactly what was going to come up. Don’t you love it when God tells you that far in advance exactly what you’re going to do when a certain situation comes up. 

Dream (5 months earlier) – I’m in a laundry room in lowest level of a building vaguely like the laundry rooms on bottom level of the US Air Force Academy. I have my clothes in a dryer that is running. There are several switches in a group on the top left side of the machine that’s like for a Pilatus PC-12 airplane. I flip one switch and I see a red rotating beacon light on the back of the dryer turn on. I only see the light shining on the wall because the light is in back of the dryer out of my sight. Then, I hit a very small push button, like a reset switch at the farthest back part on top and it suddenly turns off the dryer. I’m wondering how did that happen. I had the sense that the clothes were mostly dry but not completely yet.

The PC-12 is one of the aircraft I’ve been looking at when my company starts. It’s one that I’ve had in dreams several years ago where God was showing me which one to consider. It also fits me perfectly in some ways according to where I am currently at as a pilot. The dryer, as I found out a few months ago, represents the work of patience while we wait for God to line things up in our life. The reset button that turned everything off abruptly was me suddenly becoming impatient by what that girl told me, knowing that I could have possibly been flying one of those aircraft (and actually getting paid real money for the first time in a long time). The Air Force Academy setting indicates my current stage of life where I am learning higher level matters within God’s training program.

So, now that we see what God was showing me well in advance, let’s move on to the next dream that I had 2 days after the conversation with the girl at the airshow. It took me a couple days to realize my above dream was in fact about the airshow and these two were each saying the same thing.

Dream – I’m a passenger with my wife, Jonika, in a Boeing 747 on the ground at the gate. We are all seated and waiting for departure. For some unknown reason, I get out of the airplane using the door on the right side. I’m standing on the ground next to the 747 when they start up the engines. I get back up on the wing and I’m knocking on the door and waving in the windows to get back in. There seemed to be been another woman outside as well. Daytime setting. 

When I woke up from this dream, it didn’t take long to realize it was about the verse at the top here (Matthew 25:10). Being on the 747 represented me being ready to get on with the big things I’ve been waiting for in my life. Getting out of the jet and walking around outside was about me getting out of the position I needed to be in for the next stage of my life to begin. The woman on the ground next to the airplane was a reference to the girl I spoke with at the airshow who was hired to fly PC-12’s. Basically, God was showing me that the temptation to do something else at the last minute was going to cause me to miss out on everything that I’ve been waiting for in the last 10 years. WOW.

Well, the good news about that dream is that it clearly shows I’m about ready for all the long awaited things to show up. My personal departure for the next stage of my life is in progress right now. The other positive is that, God was showing me that my mindset was not right and that I should not be looking to do anything else, even though it seemed like a good idea according to my professional skills as a pilot. This is a great time to bring up the verse in Romans 12:2 where a clear distinction is made between doing something that “sounds good” versus doing what is God’s perfect plan for our life.

This episode is a great illustration of how God will attempt to keep you on the right track if you will obey Him. I wanted to tell about this because of the reality factor that there have been times when, if I could have chosen to do something much more fun and easier, I would have taken it. As I’ve said, I have plenty of skills I could have used to make money and live a normal life and many times, I wanted to know why I could not have taken that route. In other ways, outside of being a pilot, I did try applying my other skills to change my quality of life but, no matter what I did, it always seemed like things just would not work out.

So, the takeaway here is fairly obvious. If you really want to do what God planned for you billions of years ago, you really need to pay attention to His guidance, especially in dreams like this. The path God requires you to walk may be as unpleasant and inconvenient as mine has been. Regardless, always remember that God has a plan and a process that we must follow in order to reach our “expected end” (Jeremiah 29:11). I’ve been learning that God has a very specific process in mind which is tailored to our unique personal characteristics and His plan for us.

Just like me at times, we often get into a trap of thinking we are smarter than God and that His plan does not make one ounce of sense to us. We would rather be doing something much more rational and logical but, doing anything other than what God requires is never going to work. I do know that if you want to waste time and add years to your process, do what YOU think is right for you rather than what God shows you. If you’re anything like me, you definitely cannot afford to make this very costly mistake, no matter how sensible it seems to the very limited human mind of the flesh!
