Many times in the last several years, I’ve had to step away from my blog writing and video / podcast posting. With the kinds of subject matter I deal with here, there’s always a possibility of getting stuck in a trap of over familiarity. Mental ruts can lead to spiritual blindness that is hard to get out of. I tend to get that way at times and I’ve seen how God has brought things along in my life to help me stay balanced. There’s much value in taking a break and stepping away from a thing long enough to reset your perspective and clear your mind. This just happened again to me and that means this is the perfect time to tell you what I’ve been learning about practical steps to create mental resets.
The Over-Focus Trap
A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.
Proverbs 11:1 (KJV)
In the Bible, we see by example that to succeed at what God has called us to requires diligence, focus and persistence. In truth, we will never accomplish anything God put us here for by living a sloppy, careless life of ease and an over-casual attitude. We are told that we must study to be approved by God (2 Timothy 2:15) and that when we lack true and accurate knowledge of God’s word, we fall into destruction (Hosea 4:6).
I have found myself that all those instructions and warnings are true and most people are not where they should be because of failing to heed God’s commands. Of course, I’ve been there myself as well. As I mentioned above, recently I had to step back a bit from all my writing again and when I did, it helped me reset my perspective in a noticeable and positive way.
In the past few years as a blog writer about spiritual topics, I’ve noticed a very aggravating trend that many people do not listen to the most important things I say here. In fact, as you saw not long ago, I almost never receive emails like the one I posted in Episode 71. I won’t go into details about that but to say that it is a common theme for those in prophetic ministries. We tend to have to deal with many people who always refuse what we have to say. That leads to our getting angry at everyone and thinking no one will ever listen so what’s the point of even doing this anymore!?
Hard hearted, stubborn and rebellious people are increasingly common in our times and I’ve seen quite a lot of them here. And… Just because what I’m saying is true, that does not mean there are not still a remnant of people who are listening and benefiting from our work. So in my case, that’s where the challenge of balance and keeping a clear spirit comes in.
Truthfully, that has been very hard at times for me. I’ve said this in other places but I’m in the Elijah lineage and those kinds of people have a problem getting into offense. That’s not something I can explain here but go back and read about John the Baptist, Jonah and Elijah and you’ll see what I mean. Same lineage, same patterns (both good and bad).
With that in mind, what has God done to help me stay balanced when I have become stuck in a rut of a narrowing and unproductive perspective? Great question!
Learning To Follow The Inspiration
Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
Ecclesiastes 7:16 (KJV)
My situation has had many extreme challenges for the past 10 years. As I’ve said before, God used circumstances to push me out of my career years ago and despite wanting to have a job and normal life, He would not let me. I’ve since learned many of the reasons why He required such a personal price but it didn’t change the fact that many times, I wanted to be doing something very different.
Because of the very odd and extremely inconvenient restrictions God put on me, finding balance has not always been easy. Needless to say, when you don’t have a regular job, you probably don’t have money to do many of the things everyone else does. That means that it’s very easy to find yourself without options, including those activities that could help you stay balanced in your mind.
Having said that, God has still made it possible for me to change the channel in my head, so to speak, and do something different. For instance, I’ve had to do something I never would have in the past – watch a ton of movies. I also do a lot of digital art, which does in fact play into my calling with my invention. I have to keep up with the increasingly complex flying knowledge as a pilot (despite many years of being away from it). There’s the vast realm of national and global politics that I recently learned I have a future calling to. And, last but not least, there’s a realm of the supernatural (marvels) that requires serious attention.
Any one of those above can become a rut by themselves so it takes a certain kind of discipline to know when it’s time to switch channels. By nature, I’m not good at that sort of mental channel switching but I have learned quite a lot about being led by the Holy Spirit and going with whatever He inspires me to do next. I’m no expert there but it’s something I’ve developed significantly in the last 10 years.
Practical Advice For Those Like Me…
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Romans 8:14 (KJV)
In conclusion, my advice to anyone who finds themselves in a trap of an increasingly narrowing mindset…
- Start by learning to follow the subtle leading of the Holy Spirit.
- Break out of any form of religious mindset that puts you into a very small (and often negative) view of your life and the world around you.
- Develop new skills and talents (as I wrote about recently).
- Do something different, even if it seems to be a “waste of time that serves no purpose”.
- Don’t look at your life in an excessively utilitarian manner – God created the idea of having fun for a reason.
- Pride leads to lack of balance and a false / over-righteous view of everything.
- Shut everything down for a while until you regain a balanced and more positive outlook on life.
- Go back to simple things again; we sometimes forget that Jesus preached a very simple and positive message.
- While you’re thinking on that last one above, always remember that gospel means “good news” and we are called to be a living example of that (in contrast to a world full of increasing negativity and evil).
This is by far, not a full handling of today’s subject but as I always say, let’s see if we might come back to this again at a later time. Thank you for reading and supporting my work here, I hope you found this helpful!
PS: on a very related note today, if you have not checked out my latest video / podcast uploads, go to my YouTube or Rumble channels and see what you may have missed. I might be getting back on Spotify again with a new podcast channel as well.
