A couple months ago, I had a series of dreams all on the same night that appeared to be all on the same topic — flying as a pilot. Some of my readers know that these types of dreams are fairly common for me because I am in real life, a pilot. Having said that, there were some things going on in my life at the time that made it hard to discern the true meaning of these dreams, whether they were literal or purely symbolic. Based upon events in my life at the time, I eventually realized the dreams contained both a literal and symbolic meaning.
If you’ve ever had dreams about flying an airplane, talking on a radio with air traffic control, or navigating to an airport, this post will help you understand what God may be saying to you. In this post, I will tell you my entire series of dreams, interpret the primary symbols and then explain how the dreams fit the real life circumstances going on in my life since that time.
NOTE: Each of the following dreams were on April 11, 2026.
Dream 1: Flying A Nighttime Approach to An Airport
I’m flying in a Cessna in the right seat (maybe the back seat) at night with an instructor. We are near the airport and I’m supposed to contact the tower to tell them what we are doing. I don’t have a headset and I’m using the old style microphone and when I start talking, I don’t remember anything I’m supposed to say, a woman in the tower starts telling me how to say what I need to say. It seems like a military base that is nearby where I live so there’s an exact procedure for arrival and landing. Night time setting.
This dream was full of both literal and symbolic messages, which I will now interpret for each of the primary symbols…
- Small airplane = this is a very common symbol, especially for me, and it refers to the direction of personal matters in my life; at this time, God was showing me that something new was coming up for me which I needed to be preparing for.
- Headset = symbolically this represents putting yourself in the right mindset to hear from God, especially about His instructions for your life, the fact I was not wearing one indicated a time when I was needing to put more focus on hearing the voice of God.
- Old microphone = not surprisingly, this represents speaking, either literally or in prayer with God; anytime you see something very old in a dream, it usually points to either something from the distant past or something you have not done in a long time and have forgotten or lost your skills; in a literal sense this definitely relates to me due to lack of recent flight experience and my lack of skill in radio communications with air traffic controllers.
- Back seat = this indicates that at that time, I was not taking enough of an active position in one area of my life as it relates to God’s direction for me.
- Arrival / landing = generally, this represents a part of your life where you are moving in a direction with the intent to accomplish something, it means there is a new destination for you which you must prepare for; in literal flying terms, this does mean exactly what it shows — actual landing procedures for an airport.
- Landing procedure = in terms of literal flying, there are procedures for flying instrument approaches that require a high level of skill and practice; in symbolic terms, this could represent being careful to get exact instructions from God about the next steps in your life in order to arrive at the personal destination He has planned for you.
- Air traffic controller = symbolically, this represents getting instructions from God, usually by the Holy Spirit, as such, it means you need to be very sure to hear accurately just as if you were talking to an air traffic controller in real life; in a literal sense, as a pilot, this very much relates to me since I have not flown much lately and I’m definitely rusty on radio communications.
- Night = symbolically indicates a time of reduced visibility; in terms of literal flying, it can represent literal night or instrument flight conditions (IMC); in metaphoric terms, it can represent a time when things in your life are difficult to understand (both meanings fit me at the time of the dream).
- Nearby air base = the military is a common symbol that often represents strict discipline, order, and doing things by exact procedures; in real life, there is a military base near me which adds to the significance of this dream by suggesting the message here is one that is “near to me” in a personal way, which is true of being a pilot and has a very significant personal history connection since I first learned how to fly at the exact military base in the dream.
Dream 2: Planning A Flight On An Aviation Chart
I’m looking on an aviation chart for an airport in order to plan a flight there. At first, I find the wrong one (it had only one long runway facing north-south), but I was supposed to find a bigger airport. It seemed like I was in a class.
The meaning of this dream was particularly interesting to me, but some of it didn’t occur to me until after I spent the weeks considering the possible interpretations…
- North–south = generally, when you see something pointing north, that usually means in the direction of God (as Heaven is up from the Earth and the ways of God are higher than the ways of man), as such this meant I needed to ensure I was lined up with God’s true plans for my life.
- Wrong runway = in this dream, I was supposed to be looking for a much larger airport with multiple runways, but instead I initially found this one with only one runway; that means God was telling me that my thoughts of my future are too small and limited — His plans for me are in fact, much bigger than I have realized.
- Aviation chart = in real life, these are used for making detailed flight plans where you must calculate the direction, distance, required fuel, and all specific details about radio/GPS navigation and airport of arrival information; in a symbolic sense, this is about navigating your life towards a personal journey according to God’s plans.
- Class = this is a symbol I have dealt with many times in the past in my blog posts, this represents a time of learning something new but does not necessarily indicate a real life classroom environment; in my case, I have been spending time focusing on upgrading my own ability to hear God’s voice much more clearly and accurately (see: School Dreams (Again!) Study Assignments – Time Significance Clues – Capitol Cities.)
Dream 3: A New Handheld Aviation Radio
I have a new smaller size handheld aviation radio and I’m thinking, now I can listen to ATC so I’ll be familiar with radio calls again.
Just like the above dreams, this one had both a literal and symbolic meaning very relevant to me in many ways…
- New radio = symbolically, this represents receiving a new ability to hear from God accurately; in terms of literal flying, as I mentioned above, I am very rusty on communications with air traffic control as a pilot due to serious lack of recent experience; therefore this dream applied to me very much in both the literal and symbolic ways.
- Small radio = in real life, the new handheld aviation radios are significantly smaller than they used to be so this indicates a new/upgraded ability for me to hear God‘s voice, accurately — and with literal pilot-controller communications as well.
Biblical Interpretations
In most of my blog posts, I almost always include a fairly extensive list of relevant Bible passages that relate to and support my interpretations. For this post, I’ve decided to limit that to only the following.
With that said, here are only a few of the many Bible verses that apply to the dreams above. Because these dreams all have the common, repeated theme of hearing God’s voice accurately, I have chosen to focus on verses that deal exclusively with that…
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
John 10:27 (KJV)
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
1 Samuel 15:22 (KJV)
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Matthew 4:4 (KJV)
Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
Deuteronomy 13:4 (KJV)
