Dreams of Destiny: What Does It Mean to Dream of a Mountain, a Desert Deployment, and a Remote Island?

Recently, I had two dreams on the same night that both dealt with the same situation. The dreams involved a sketch of a mountain range, a military deployment to a desert, and a long flight to a far away, unknown remote island. Both dreams came the day after a situation when personal circumstances went very badly for me due to a prolonged personal health matter which I had hoped I was on the verge of finally getting fixed. After giving consideration to both dreams, it became clear that God was using these nighttime parables as a reminder to see things from a much higher perspective. If you’ve ever had dreams dealing with any of the symbols I am about to discuss in this post, I believe this will help you understand what God is trying to show you about an area of your life that may be otherwise confusing.

Dreaming of a mountain range you sketched coming true, a military deployment to a desert, or a long flight to a remote island often points to a season of spiritual “wilderness training” — God stripping away comfort and control to prepare you for a much bigger calling than your present circumstances reveal. The mountain represents the “great and mighty things” still ahead (Jeremiah 33:3); the desert and island represent the isolated, resource-scarce proving ground; the flight path represents the faith-walk of leaving the familiar, as Abraham did (Hebrews 11:8).

Dream 1: iPad Sketch of a Mountain Range & Desert Conditions

I’m in a far away desert place. There’s a mountain range that I drew on my iPad that is actually there in front of me. I’m looking at that sketch on my iPad — when you zoom out, all you see is a bunch of white and grey but when you zoom in, you can see the mountain details. At one point, I looked at the real mountain range and saw an exact feature (peaks) that I drew and I said I know where I am because I can see the real mountain in front of me exactly as I drew it. I told the older lady this (my real life neighbor) and she started scribbling all over my sketch. Fortunately, I just used the back button and deleted what she did. This was more of a daytime scene. After that, I turned around to go back to my small building (the scene is now like a military deployment) and I couldn’t remember where it was. The scene was a desert with nothing but sand and some small buildings spread out. It was now a dusk scene.

Here are the primary symbols interpreted…

  • Mountain range = a magnificent scene in the midst of a harsh real life environment, a place of transformation, something profound worth remembering, a reminder that there are “big things” coming to me which I must keep in focus despite the horrible circumstances that I have been experiencing (a ref to Jeremiah 33:3, “great and mighty things”).
  • Sketch / art = creating a representation of real life experience in a form for others (and myself) to see which helps me to remember where I am in my own circumstances / personal journey; in real terms, this represents this website and everything I do that is related to it (in real life, I am a digital artist).
  • Zooming in / out = a certain level of detailed knowledge of my circumstances is required to accurately understand where I am in His plan regarding the big things He is leading me to.
  • Neighbor woman = this is a symbolic representation of someone who fits the broader sense of being “near” to me in terms of a social media connection or by phone contact (see explanation below).
  • Scribbling on sketch = a warning that the “neighbor” is definitely not a person to talk to about valuable personal things — this action clearly shows complete disregard and dishonor for something I have put a lot of work into (see explanation below).
  • Unknown desert location = a personal wilderness training ground which is a mandatory part of fulfilling God’s true purpose for our life.
  • Military deployment = an austere and highly restrictive environment that God sends His people into when He has chosen them for a very high calling in life, which most people never experience
  • Lost = me getting disoriented (probably from yesterday situation having to cancel GI apt and reschedule with different doctor…)
  • Dusk = a setting where there is a lack of light often indicates a “dark time” of adverse circumstances, in some cases it can also represent a lack of understanding of what is going on in the life of the dreamer.

Real Life Circumstances / Perspective

The neighbor woman who scribbled on my sketch represents someone who lives nearby who has treated me, my wife and God’s calling for us with extreme disgrace, dishonor, and hostility. I have repeatedly tried to warn the person about their attitude, which is sending them straight to hell, but the person has repeatedly refused to listen to me. Several months earlier, I had a dream where Jesus appeared in the form of my previous Air Force commander, showing me that this person has accomplished absolutely nothing of any value with their life.

The unknown desert location combined with the theme of a military deployment is the personal wilderness situation I’ve been in for the last 11 years. This is a mandatory part of God’s training for anyone He has chosen for a very high calling and purpose. All the great men in the Bible went through years of a wilderness before God promoted them to their intended position (Joseph, King David, Moses, etc).

Intriguingly, the day before this dream, I had a vision of a beautiful and peaceful scene of a snowy mountain range partially obscured by clouds. It was only the evening after the above dream that I saw a text message from my parent ministry (JMMI) with the verse Jeremiah 33:3. When I saw that text, I knew immediately it was connected to my dream and the vision. The most important message here was a reminder that God has “great and mighty things” in store for me and to not forget that.

That reminder was especially necessary since the last scene in the dream showed that I was lost and disoriented. That was a very accurate description of my mental state the day before the dream when a very necessary medical appointment had to be canceled, which meant a 2 month long serious GI tract disorder was still not going to be fixed yet.

And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

Mark 9:2 (KJV)

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Jeremiah 33:3 (KJV)

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Matthew 7:6 (KJV)

Dream 2: A Long Flight to a Remote Island

I’m looking on a map that seems to have a flight path shown as a schedule. There’s a very large land area in the middle. One flight path is the primary focus – it goes from the far upper left of the map to the far right lower corner where there’s a very small island. There’s another island out there which the flight path goes over before reaching the small one. I don’t know what either of those islands are and they are not labeled. I see a zoom in on the slightly larger one and see a satellite look down image of it with one tall concrete building and a few other buildings from the past close together with very little open space.

Here are the primary symbols interpreted…

  • Flight path = a very long personal and spiritual journey just as Abraham whom God told to leave what was familiar to him and go to a place he knew nothing about; this is the exact same process God requires of his top chosen people now in our times.
  • Map view looking down = a reminder to see circumstances from a higher perspective knowing that this is all part of God’s training program for a great destiny which most people never experience.
  • Remote unknown island = represents my current living arrangement where there is not much here and no way to go anywhere (due to lack of transportation and resources).
  • Other island = another actual nearby location which has nearly the same conditions as the first (sparse amenities); in real life, I have gone several times to the nearby VA hospital which is a tall building standing near a university which is made of many older style cement buildings.
  • Upper to lower = going from high to low (up to down) represents the path to humility; those who humble themselves voluntarily will be exalted by God.
  • Large land area = this represents a country (mine) and a very subtle hint from Hebrews 11:8 about my future calling regarding my energy invention company and something even bigger that comes after that.

Big Picture Perspective

In addition to the above description, the important elements to point out here center around the long journey which is Biblically what Abraham was called to go by faith as it says in Hebrews 11:8 “not knowing where he went”. Anytime God has huge plans for a person, especially within the context of the Kingdom of God, they are required to leave everything behind and go to a fas away place totally on faith with no idea how they are going to survive. This is what I’ve been writing about extensively in my ongoing series, The Secret Life of A Supernatural Entrepreneur.

This dream was a second illustration used to remind me of the big picture of God’s plan for me and to remember that He has very big things in store for me despite the fact that the greatly prolonged negative real life circumstances appear to say the opposite. This is again why I write my lengthy series linked above where I tell many personal details about my last 11+ years in God’s “ancient training program”.

Just as with the first dream in this post, I write all this partly because my testimony can and will help you understand how God will lead you into your own destiny when you follow the same principles He has taught me in these years.

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

Hebrews 11:8 (KJV)

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:9 (KJV)

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Matthew 23:12 (KJV)

Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:

Isaiah 40:4 (KJV)
