Over the years I have received many dreams by email from people who wanted to know what God was showing them about a relationship or a potential spouse. These are some of the most personal and emotionally charged dreams you can have — and they are also some of the most important. Marriage and relationship dreams are not random. They are not wish fulfillment. When God gives you a dream about the person you are with or the person you are considering marrying, He is trying to tell you something you need to know before you make one of the most consequential decisions of your life.
I want to say something upfront that is critical to understanding these dreams: what God shows us in dreams is always partial. He does not give you the entire story in a single night. You gain the rest of the story through prayer, through real life experiences, and through spiritual discernment over time. Dreams about relationships are the beginning of a conversation with God — not the final verdict. Keep that in mind as you read everything I share below.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
1 Corinthians 13:9 (KJV)
Marriage Dreams Are Biblical
Before I go further, let me establish something clearly: God speaking to people through dreams about marriage and relationships is not a modern idea. It is thoroughly Biblical. Consider Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus:
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
Matthew 1:20 (KJV)
God directly told Joseph in a dream to take Mary as his wife. That dream changed the course of human history. If Joseph had not received and obeyed that dream, the entire plan of God for the birth of Jesus could have gone sideways from a human perspective. That is how seriously God takes marriage — and that is how seriously He takes using dreams to guide us in it.
But God does not limit Himself to dreams when it comes to guiding us in relationships. He also uses prophetic signs in real life. Consider the story of Isaac and Rebecca in Genesis 24. Abraham’s servant was sent to find a wife for Isaac and asked God for a very specific sign:
And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Genesis 24:14 (KJV)
Rebecca fulfilled that sign exactly. God used a real life prophetic act to confirm the right spouse. This is a pattern throughout Scripture — God uses both dreams at night and signs in real life to guide us toward the right person and away from the wrong one.
What God Will Warn You About in Dreams
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
2 Corinthians 6:14 (KJV)
One of the most common things I see in the dreams people send me is God warning them about serious character flaws in a person they are in a relationship with or considering marrying. God will show you things in dreams that you cannot yet see with your natural eyes — things that are hidden beneath a charming surface or a good first impression. In fact, I’ve probably seen more relationship dreams sent to me for interpretation containing warnings than anything else.
Some of the things God will warn you about in relationship dreams include:
- Selfishness and immaturity — a person who is not ready to put another person first.
- Laziness and carelessness — someone who will not carry their weight in a marriage.
- Evil attitudes — hidden anger, cruelty, or a controlling spirit.
- No concern for God or others — a person who is spiritually disconnected or spiritually dangerous and a fake “Christian”.
- Dishonesty and disloyalty — a liar or someone who will betray you.
- Adultery — God will sometimes show you the future or current unfaithfulness of a person before you marry them.
These are serious warnings and they must be taken as such. I have seen people receive clear warning dreams about a person and dismiss them because their emotions were too invested. Years later they say, “Everything God showed me in that dream came true.” Do not let your emotions override what God is showing you.
What God Will Show You That Is Good
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
Genesis 2:18 (KJV)
God does not only give warning dreams. When a person is genuinely good and right for you, He will also confirm that in dreams. He may show you qualities about a person that you have not yet had the opportunity to see — their faithfulness, their heart for God, their strength of character, their loyalty, their kindness. God wants to help you see who a person really is on the inside — not just who they are presenting themselves to be in the early stages of a relationship.
The purpose of all of this is the same: God uses dreams to guide us in right relationships so we do not marry the wrong person. Marriage is one of the most critical decisions you will ever make — and God knows this far better than we do.
Remember this as well… God’s idea of a perfect spouse may be different than yours. Yep. This can come as a bit of a surprise and I am familiar with that. Regarding my marriage, I expected God to send someone who fit the natural conditions I had for who was “best suited to me” but I emphasized slightly less the unknown spiritual factors that were critical to my calling.
When God sent my wife, she was of a different culture, different ethnicity, different family background, and a very large age gap. To make it even more challenging, we spent 4 years on FaceTime video calls, never having met in person until the week before we got married. I would never recommend that to anyone else but, it was God’s plan and neither of us had the financial ability to do it differently.
None of this is negative, it just came with some big challenges to overcome and adjust to. But, if you’ve been reading my blogs, then you know how God gave me the technical design of my invention through my wife Jonika, in a most unusual way. If you are unfamiliar with my story of my true purpose in life, start with these here…

When you hear my story about how God sent me my wife and how she directly fits into my global energy invention, you will understand much about how critical it is that you marry the right person.
Why Marriage Is So Critical to Your God-Given Purpose
Here is something the American church rarely tells you, but the Bible is very clear about: marry the wrong person and you will never fulfill your true purpose in life. The person you marry will either accelerate your calling or derail it. There is no neutral option. Your spouse will either support what God put you here to do, be indifferent to it, or actively work against it — sometimes without even realizing it. God’s true intent for marriage is that both people work together to effect a much greater outcome than they could if they remained alone.
How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?
Deuteronomy 32:30 (KJV)
The right husband or wife, on the other hand, is a key part of fulfilling your God-given purpose. God designed marriage as a partnership in destiny — two people whose callings are complementary, who sharpen each other, and who together accomplish things neither could accomplish alone. When that partnership is right, it is one of the most powerful forces on earth for the Kingdom of God.
This is why God takes such an active interest in guiding you through dreams and signs when it comes to your relationships. He is not being intrusive. He is protecting the very calling He placed on your life.
The Biblical Order of Marriage That Many Churches Get Wrong 👑
I want to address something that I believe is a serious problem in the American church, because it directly affects how people approach marriage and why so many Christian marriages fail or fall short of God’s design.
The Bible is clear about the order of authority and priority in marriage: Jesus is #1. The husband is #2. The wife is #3. Men are to be reverenced, wives are to be honored (those two terms are NOT the same!)
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
1 Corinthians 11:3 (KJV)
This is the Kingdom of God order. It is not a cultural opinion. It is the design of God for the family unit. But the American church has drifted dangerously far from this. Churches have made an idol out of marriage — elevating the institution above the King who designed it and the Kingdom purposes it is meant to serve. When marriage becomes the goal rather than a vehicle for God’s purposes, it is out of order. And things that are out of order in God’s Kingdom do not function the way He designed them to.
Marriage is important — critically important. But its importance lies in its role within God’s Kingdom plan, not in being an end in itself. When you understand this, you approach dreams about marriage and relationships with a completely different perspective. You are not just looking for a compatible partner. You are looking for the person God has chosen to walk with you in your Kingdom assignment.
Interpreting Your Marriage and Relationship Dreams
Because I have interpreted many of these dreams over the years, I can tell you that they are rarely black and white. Relationship dreams require careful prayer and discernment. A dream about a person may be literal — God is showing you something about that specific person. Or it may be symbolic — the person in your dream may represent a quality, a type, or a situation rather than that individual specifically.
Here are some principles I apply when interpreting marriage and relationship dreams:
- Context matters deeply. What was the setting? What were you doing? What was the emotional atmosphere of the dream? These details are not accidental.
- Pay attention to what the person was doing, not just who they were. Their actions in the dream often reveal their character in real life — most of the time, these are all symbolic and must be interpreted.
- Recurring dreams carry more weight. If God is showing you the same thing multiple times, He is emphasizing it.
- Pray before and after. Ask God what He is showing you before you interpret the dream, and ask Him again after. He will confirm the interpretation through real life events and spiritual discernment.
- Do not act impulsively on a single dream. Let it be confirmed through prayer, the Word, and real life experience before making a major decision.
- There is a difference between a temporary condition (good or bad) and a permanent one — don’t dismiss a person because they are having a bad day, or you get one bad dream about them. Find out if this is a trend or a one-off issue.
- For single men, not every woman you see in a dream is a potential wife! Biblically, a woman can be used to represent wisdom (Proverbs 8), don’t jump to conclusions about a woman who appears in your dream — context matters here!
What To Do Next!
Truthfully, there is MUCH more I can say about marriages and how God will speak to you in dreams about yours than what is in this blog. This is a pretty good start however as it covers many of the most important factors you need to know.
Here’s where you should start: ALWAYS write down your dreams in a place where they will be preserved. I use multiple digital documents to store mine and I have thousands of dreams recorded on well over 1,000 pages! Unless you have your dreams recorded, there is no way to go back and find out what God already told you about important matters like this. I can’t count all the times I went back through my dream journals and found the biggest answers to questions I thought God had been silent on! (Read episode 93 linked above and you’ll see what I mean.)
Next, use Bible-based resources to look up the meaning of the symbols you see in your dreams. Each symbol will have more than one potential meaning and context is critical to correct interpretation. If a dream list does not include valid Bible references, do not follow it — there are many counterfeit online dream websites that will lead you astray. The resources I give on my website are all Biblically based, whether it be my blogs, my books and videos or those I recommend by other authors (see my store pages).
