Feeling Like Something Is Missing From Your Life? You’re Not Alone — And There Is An Answer

Regardless of your beliefs, I can guarantee almost everyone has been confronted by the same nagging question about their life: is this all there is and isn’t there something missing from my life? I was raised in church and spent the next several decades of my life in lots of different churches and yet, none of them helped me get the answers to life’s most important questions about my purpose. It was not until God pushed me out of my 20 year Air Force career that I finally had to get my answer to this question about my life. When I got very serious about my search, God came through for me and the answers started trickling in. In this post, I want to give a brief summary of how common the question is about missing purpose and point you in the direction of what things I did to finally get my answers. If you take seriously what I have to say here, and you do what I strongly recommend, I can guarantee you WILL begin getting the answers you have been looking for — and I can promise you they will be so far beyond anything you could ever have imagined.

Searching For The Answer To A Life Mystery

I am not alone in this experience — and neither are you. Before I get into my own story, I want to show you just how widespread this question really is, because the data may actually surprise you.

Question: How common is it for people to wonder if there’s something missing in their life, especially regarding what they do for work, etc?

It’s extremely common. Wondering if “something is missing” in life — especially tied to career, purpose, or daily work — is a widespread human experience, not a rare personal failing. Surveys, psychological research, and cultural observations consistently show that a large portion of people grapple with this at various life stages.

Job Dissatisfaction and Unfulfillment

Work is a major trigger because it occupies so much of our time and identity:

  • Pew Research (recent data) found that roughly half of U.S. workers (around 51%) describe themselves as extremely or very satisfied with their jobs overall. However, satisfaction drops for aspects like pay, advancement opportunities, and skill development. Many are only “somewhat satisfied.”
  • Gallup polls have long shown lower “engagement” levels: Often only about 30-34% of employees are actively engaged, with the rest “not engaged” or “actively disengaged.” Older estimates frequently cite ~70% of workers feeling unfulfilled or unhappy at work.
  • High desire for change: Studies indicate 47% of older millennials (33-40) felt they chose the wrong career path. Broader claims (sometimes cited in career advice) put the figure of people in unfulfilling jobs as high as 80-93%, though these can vary by methodology.
  • Age patterns: Younger people (20s-30s) often report high rates of wanting career shifts (e.g., 64-80% in some informal breakdowns), while midlife brings intensified reflection.

This isn’t just “quitting culture” — it’s tied to deeper questions of meaning, especially as people realize a job provides stability but not necessarily fulfillment.

Broader “Something Missing” Feelings

  • Midlife questioning: True “midlife crises” (dramatic upheaval) affect only 10-20% of adults in studies, but milder reevaluation, dissatisfaction, or feelings of emptiness are far more prevalent. Stress, purpose reevaluation, and life transitions peak around the 40s-50s in many datasets, with happiness U-shaped (dipping midlife).
  • Many people across ages report this on forums (Reddit, etc.), in therapy, and coaching — often linked to routine, lack of growth, relationships, or “is this all there is?” Millennials and Gen Z show elevated rates amid economic pressures, social media comparison, and shifting expectations.
  • Global/U.S. context: Hundreds of millions worldwide report work-related unfulfillment per Gallup estimates. Cultural factors matter (lower reported midlife issues in some East Asian contexts), but it’s a near-universal theme in affluent societies.

Why It’s So Common

Humans were not designed for 40-hour specialized jobs in modern economies — we were wired for purpose, connection, and meaning that runs far deeper than a paycheck or a title. The modern world piles on top of that with social media comparison, economic pressure that traps people in “good enough” jobs, and life stage transitions that keep forcing the question back to the surface — career beginnings, marriage, children, aging parents, health changes. It’s often episodic rather than constant, which is why people can go years feeling fine and then suddenly hit a wall where nothing seems to add up anymore. If that sounds familiar, you are not broken — you are responding normally to a real mismatch between your daily reality and what you were actually created for.

The research confirms what most people already feel privately — something is genuinely missing, and no amount of career adjustment or life optimization seems to fill it permanently. That is because the answer is not found in any of those places. I know this from experience.

The Answer Does Exist (because I found it)

If this resonates with you, you need to look at my testimony because I went through this for years until I finally began getting the answers. I do need to tell you right up front that many of the answers to these questions are going to come to you in a way you are not familiar with and may even be biased against.

This is exactly what happened to me and when the answers began coming to me, I had a choice to make. I can tell you from 11 years of experience now that, unfortunately, most people do NOT make the right decision when those answers come. The reason for that is because the answers are often personally confrontational and very inconvenient. I had to deal with that myself and yet, I still made the right choice even when many natural factors were aggressively fighting against me.

For me, the catalyst was not something I chose — it was something that happened to me. After twenty years serving as an intelligence officer in the United States Air Force, God pushed me out. At the time it felt disorienting, even jarring. But looking back, it was the most purposeful disruption of my life. The career had given me discipline, structure, and a way of analyzing the world — but I also knew it was only supposed to be a stepping stone to something much bigger. When that structure was gone, the question that had been nagging me for years got very loud: what am I actually here for?

What I did not expect was the form the answers would come in. I was not sitting in a seminar or reading a self-help book when things began to shift — the answers started coming through my deliberate pursuit of the God who created the entire universe. Not the lame churchy version. The real thing (which most churches don’t even know they are lacking). While in that pursuit, God began revealing to me that the supernatural, miracles and how He still speaks in symbolic dreams is ALL still valid today. And that’s when my answers finally came.

God WILL Speak To You About Your Life!

This is where many people will check out, and I understand that reaction because I had to work through my own lack of understanding. But I had already made the decision to take my dreams seriously, to study them and document them rather than dismiss them. That decision changed the entire trajectory of my life.

The dreams began pointing to something I never would have arrived at through my own reasoning: a specific energy technology invention — what I now call the Blue Cube Rocket — that God was directing me to develop. Alongside that came a writing assignment. I began to understand that part of my purpose was to document this journey in real time, not after the fact when everything looked neat and resolved, but in the middle of it — so that others wrestling with the same questions could see that the path is real even when it is messy. That is what eventually became the Supernatural Entrepreneur series and the books that followed.

The hard truth I have to share with you is this: most people do not follow through when the answers come. Not because the answers are unclear, but because they are inconvenient and personally confrontational. They require you to let go of the version of your life you had planned and accept a version that looks nothing like what you expected. I had natural factors aggressively pushing back against me — logic, finances, the opinions of others, wrong but popular church teaching, and my own doubt. What got me through was simply a decision to trust the Source of the answers more than I trusted the resistance. If you are serious about finding what is missing, that same decision is eventually going to be in front of you too.

What You Should Do Next…

If you are not yet familiar with my testimony, I have an ongoing series titled The Secret Life of A Supernatural Entrepreneur where I walk through the raw details of my life journey of discovering my true life purpose. I also have several books that deal with this same subject such as The Supernatural Science of Reaching Your God-Given Purpose.

I have written all these because when I started my journey of discovery, there was no instruction book to help me along. I began to realize God was giving ME the assignment to write that book to help many others find their real purpose in this life. If you are ready to stop wondering and start discovering, that is exactly where I invite you to begin.

I went through this journey the hard way — thrown into the deep end by God to sink or swim. There were MANY days I really did not feel like I was going to survive because my previous 4 decades of church had effectively taught me nothing useful (that was a shock). But, somehow I managed to barely survive the process and now I have a very solid ongoing testimony that is soon to reveal the proof that the process I went through works. My calling and purpose are obviously different than yours but, the process is very similar.

Here’s what you should do next…

  • You must ask God the raw questions about your life.
  • You must understand that He WILL answer you using the same means He did with me (through dreams and the prophetic).
  • When God brings the connections you need, they might very well be the opposite of what you expected.
  • If you do not follow God when He shows you your next steps, your journey will end and you will remain stuck in the same place where you started.

Always Remember This

God’s plan for your life is very big in more ways and dimensions than I can express here. I tell my story because it proves exactly that — God’s plan for my life was way beyond my ability to imagine it. A global technology inventor? The upcoming CEO of a major energy tech company? High-speed propulsion, flying cars, anti-gravity…?

Yep! That’s what God showed me. And I never saw it coming. If He will do that for me, what will He do for you?!

That’s the real point of my testimony. I want others to find out the astounding things God has planned for them, not just me!!

Will you do this? The world is counting on you in more ways than you will ever imagine.
