I’ve wanted to build an app for this website for years. Every time the idea came up, it ran into the same wall: hiring a developer to build something like this properly used to cost many thousands of dollars, easily. So it stayed a “someday” idea — filed away, not forgotten, just out of reach. Then, a few days ago, it hit me: that wall isn’t there anymore. I could actually do this now, myself, with AI doing the heavy technical lifting. So I started. The app is rapidly progressing and now is your opportunity to get in on the development project!

PROGRESS REPORT: Before we get into a few details on my new Supernatural Science App build, let me say that I am very happy to announce that the new app is working extremely well! We are still very much in the development stage but progress is moving along very rapidly and I am extremely excited about how well this is going! There’s only one thing holding back continued progress right now which I will tell you about at the end of this post. (Hint: it’s something YOU can help with immediately to ensure this app project gets finished and published without delay!)

A few of you have asked what this app building process actually looks like day to day, especially since I keep mentioning I’m building this “with AI.” I wanted to pull back the curtain a little — partly because I think it’s really interesting, and partly because I want you to feel like you’re part of this effort as it comes together, not just hearing about it after the fact.

It Didn’t Start With Code

Let me start off by saying that this project hit me suddenly one day after seeing a social media ad for an AI-driven app builder. I had seen that ad before a few times (probably) but never gave it too much thought. I figured the cost of producing an app was out of my range so I always kept putting it off for a later time. But just the other day… I felt the sudden urge to actually check into that app builder and see what I could do if it had a free starter plan. When I did that, I immediately knew I was on the right track.

That’s how this started. Just like many of my other projects do — a long period of pondering a new idea followed by sudden urge where I “just know” I’m doing the right thing.

The first real decision I had to make wasn’t about features or buttons. It was a simple question: does building an app for this website content even make sense? What would an app actually do that the website doesn’t already do? That took me a while to work through — the answer wasn’t “obviously yes,” and I had to get clear on what an app would offer that a webpage couldn’t (a private dream journal you’d actually use, personalized notifications, direct messaging, something that feels like its yours on your home screen).

Naming Something Is Harder Than It Looks

Picking a name turned into its own whole project (remember how many times I tried renaming this website?!) My first AI-suggested choice seemed perfect — until I found out it was already a decades-old trademark, still actively in use (Starlog). Back to the drawing board. Other name ideas surfaced — some interesting, some odd, some too predictable. What I finally landed on instead is a made-up word, built from a real one, that ties directly into what the app (and my website) is really all about.

I’m not telling you what it is yet. I want the name to be part of the reveal when this officially launches, not something that leaks out early in a blog post. So for now, just know: the official name exists, it means something, and I’m excited for you to hear it.

Design Is a Lot of “No, Not Quite”

If you’d seen the early drafts of the app icon, you’d understand why this section exists. We (myself and AI) went through several icon designs with the app’s name baked in (turns out that’s wrong — your phone already shows the name under the icon). Then, icons with glossy shine effects looked great except that most modern app icons are simpler. Then came the nitpicking artistic details… make sure there’s not too much empty space in the design that don’t let the app stand out your home screen. What we landed on took real back-and-forth to get right. Nothing about “good design” arrived on the first try.

The Boring Decisions Matter Most

Here’s what surprised me most: the least glamorous conversations were the most important ones — details you would never know unless you watched me think through how everything needs to work…

• Should the dream journal need a login? (Yes — otherwise you’d lose your entries if you ever switched phones.)
• Should the smart search work without internet? (Not yet — that’s a much bigger technical lift than it sounds, so we’re building the simpler version first and revisiting resident data issues later.)
• What happens if your data gets accidentally dumped on your iPhone or Android device? (We built a JSON-scripted backup system for exactly that, before this ever becomes a real problem.)

None of that is exciting to read about. Yet, all of it is the actual work that must be done correctly before the app is published!

“AI-Driven” Doesn’t Mean “Automatic”

I think there’s an assumption that building something with AI means you describe an idea and a finished product appears. That’s not really what this has been like. It’s been more like having a very capable collaborator who catches things I wouldn’t have thought of — a trademark conflict, accessibility issues with data storage, a security limitation in how iPhones and Androids handle app data — while I’m still the one making every real decision: what the app should say, what it should look like, what matters enough to build now versus later. The tool didn’t replace the judgment calls, it just meant I could ensure the final product didn’t run into big problems far beyond my ability to foresee.

Where This Stands Right Now

Development is very much underway and progressing rapidly — real progress, real decisions, real building happening behind the scenes. I’m not ready to share the app link with the general public yet, but I’ll let you know the moment there’s something ready for you to see and try for yourself. What really surprised me is that I expected this project to take a couple months at least, but then I suddenly realized that with the AI app builder, I could get this thing done in only a matter of days!!

So at this point, we could finish the initial phase of this project by next week! However… the only way I can do that is with your help — right now.
