If you’ve ever felt a quiet, persistent pull toward something bigger — a sense deep in your gut that your life is supposed to mean more than it currently does — you’re not imagining it. That feeling is the fingerprint of God on your life, pointing you toward a purpose He designed for you before you were born. The problem is that most people feel that pull every single day and never find out where it leads. This post is about why that happens and what you can actually do about it.
God Designed You with a Specific Purpose in Mind
Most people treat the idea of a “God-given purpose” as something vague and inspirational — a nice thought for a greeting card. But the Bible is extremely specific about this. Before you were formed, God knew you. Before you were born, He set you apart. He created specific works for you to do and prepared them in advance. This is not poetic language. It is a literal description of how God operates with every human being He puts on this earth.
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10
The word used for “handiwork” in the original Greek is poiema — the same root that gives us our word “poem.” You are God’s poem. A crafted, intentional creation with a specific message to deliver to the world. That’s not an accident and it’s not generic. It’s a design with your name on it.
Why Most People Never Discover It
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the church has done a very poor job preparing people to find and fulfill their God-given purpose. Most churches are focused on getting people saved, keeping them morally upright, and filling the pews. That’s not nothing — but it falls far short of what God actually has in mind for the people sitting in those seats. Very few churches teach people how to hear God’s voice, interpret the signs He sends, or walk through the preparation process that a major calling requires. Most people leave church feeling inspired but no closer to knowing what they were actually put here to do.
On top of that, most of us are conditioned by society to define our lives by career, income, and comfort — none of which are bad things, but none of which are the same as purpose. Purpose is what God designed you to contribute to the world. A career may only be the temporary stage of your development until God pushes you into the next stage of training for your real purpose.
The Signs God Is Already Showing You
Most people are already receiving signals from God about their purpose — they just don’t know how to read them. Here are some of the most common ones:
- Recurring desires and daydreams — the ideas that keep coming back no matter how many times you dismiss them. God often plants purpose in the form of desires that won’t go away.
- Unusual gifts and abilities — things you’re naturally good at that others struggle with. These are rarely accidental.
- Dreams at night — God has been using dreams to communicate purpose and direction since the beginning of recorded history. If you’re having vivid or recurring dreams, they may be saying more than you think.
- Patterns of trials — if you keep running into the same types of hardship across different seasons of your life, God may be developing something specific in you that only those trials can build.
- Prophetic words from others — people with genuine prophetic gifts will often identify things about your calling before you can see them yourself.
The Role of Suffering in Revealing Your Calling
This is the part most people don’t want to hear: finding your God-given purpose almost always involves a season — sometimes a very long one — of hardship, confusion, and what feels like delay. I call it the ancient training program. It’s the process God uses to develop the character, skill, and spiritual depth required to actually carry the purpose He has for you. Moses spent 40 years in the desert. Joseph spent years in a pit and a prison. David spent years running for his life before he ever sat on the throne.
None of those people would have been qualified to do what God called them to do without going through what they went through first. If you are currently in a season of difficulty and it feels like your life is going nowhere, consider the possibility that you are in the middle of preparation — not abandonment.
The Instruction Book No One Gave You
When I began my own journey toward purpose in 2009, there was no roadmap. No one had written a practical guide to walking through the process of discovering a supernatural calling, enduring the training, and actually moving toward fulfillment of what God put you here to do. I had to learn it all the hard way, one painful and confusing step at a time. Out of that experience, I’ve spent years documenting everything God taught me — so you don’t have to start from zero the way I did.
That’s what the Supernatural Entrepreneur series is about. It’s an ongoing 100+ episode biographical blog series written in real time — not from the comfort of hindsight, but from inside the journey as it’s still unfolding. It covers the awakening, the training, the revelations, and the ongoing process of a God-given purpose coming to life. If you’ve ever felt like something big is supposed to happen through you but you can’t figure out what it is or how to get there, that series was written for you.

How to Start Walking Toward Your Purpose Today
You don’t need to have everything figured out before you take the first step. In fact, God rarely gives you the full picture upfront. Here are the most important things you can do right now:
- Start asking the right question. Not “what do I want to do with my life?” but “God, what did you put me here to do?” The shift in that question changes everything.
- Pay attention to your dreams. God is a communicator and dreams are one of His most consistent channels. Start writing them down.
- Stop running from the hard seasons. The thing you’ve been trying to escape may be exactly what is building you for what comes next.
- Find others who are walking the same path. Isolation is one of the biggest obstacles to discovering purpose. Community with people who are seriously pursuing their calling changes your trajectory.
- Read the stories of people who’ve been through the process. You can learn an enormous amount from someone else’s journey without having to repeat all of their mistakes.
If you’re ready to go deeper, start with Episode 1 of the Supernatural Entrepreneur series — a real-time account of what it actually looks like to discover, endure, and begin fulfilling a God-given purpose in the modern world. The journey is unusual, the training is hard, and the destination is worth everything it costs to get there.
